February’s NPD Sales Numbers

Have you ever heard of the NPD sales numbers? I’m not surprised if your answer is no. A lot of people haven’t. They are basically the sales figures of the gaming industry in the United States. Meaning, it tracks how many consoles, handhelds, games, etc. were sold within a given month or year. The stats are released every month, and are typically used by game industry analysts and people who work within the industry in order to see how they are doing. The NPD sales numbers for February just came out a few days ago, and I figured I’d pass along the news. Admittedly, I did not look up these numbers myself. I actually get them from KOXM (The Official Xbox Magazine’s podcast) every month. It’s quite fascinating to see what the stats look like each month because then you can see how each console/game is doing, and from there, attempt to predict what will happen in the following months. These are some of February’s sales numbers:

Console Sales:
1. Xbox- 426,000
2. PS3- 360,000
3. Wii- 228,000

Handheld Sales:
1. Nintendo 3DS- 262,000
No stats on the Sony Vita yet

Software Sales:
1. MW3
2. Final Fantasy XIII-2
3. UFC: Undisputed 3
4. Kingdoms Of Amalur: Reckoning
5. Just Dance 3
6. NBA 2K12
7. Soul Caliber 5
8. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
9. Twisted Metal
10. Battlefield 3

So now that I’ve given you some of the main statistics, I’l provide some of my own interpretations of them. First off, the Xbox is obviously doing fantastic, with almost double the amount of sales when compared to the Wii. It’s pretty obvious that the Wii frenzy has finally calmed down, and anyone who wanted one pretty much has one now. This is good for Xbox because it’s now back on top, while PS3 continues to sell less, like it almost always has. As for handhelds, there’s no stats on the Vita yet because it just came out. Lastly, the software sales are no surprise. MW3 is going to be on top for an extremely long time, and none of the other games up there surprise me either. One of the key differences that I’m sure we’ll see in the coming months is the inclusion of ME3 in the list. It’s selling like crazy and I’m guessing it’ll take #2 or #3.
